Teaching Reading is Rocket Science

Beware of anyone who tells you that teaching reading is simple or that it can be simplified into a few easy steps. Reading is much more than decoding. Learning to be a fluent reader requires the integration of reading the words, reading with fluent expression, understanding vocabulary, and having sufficient background knowledge while understanding and utilizing comprehension strategies. A fluent reader should also be able to "write what he has read and read back what he has written." - wonderful words from one of my mentors, Dr. David Schenck, educator and founder of Schenck School in Atlanta, Georgia which helps children and adults overcome reading difficulties due to dyslexia.

Connect to Comprehension's reading program helps teachers and parents develop the skills of their struggling readers so they can overcome their challenges and become successful readers. Teaching all of these components in an explicit, systematic manner is indeed "rocket science"!
